First some information about rice. It is the seed of the grass species Oryza sativa (Asian rice) or Oryza glaberrima (African rice). As a cereal grain, it is the most widely consumed staple food for a large part in Asia. But, also it is eaten in the all country in world. There are a 2 types of rice: white and brown.

White rice and blood sugar

Do you know why some people avoid white rice? The reason is that they think it has a high glycemic index and it raises the blood sugar levels. But this is not true ! The colour can not affect on it. The reason is the type of rice. For example basmati rice has very low glycemic index regardless of its color, and brown basmati rice can raise your glucose levels more than white rice.

One study which include 14 participants has shown that. The participants has ate 11 different types of rice belongs to what category the scientists measured the subjects’ blood glucose levels. While brown basmati rice is in the medium-high glycemic index the results showed that white basmati rice has low glycemic index. This shows that the color of the rice doesn’t mean that it will spike your glucose levels.

Another reason why white rice is better and healthier of brown rice is that brown rice contains more phytates. Phytates are an anti-nutrient that blocks the absorption of beneficial minerals such as iron, zinc and calcium which are found in rice. If you eat this type of food it can lead to mineral deficiencies and a host of unpleasant symptoms although this blocking process doesn’t harm your health.

To sum up, you should not judge the food, depending on its color because both types of rice have advantages and disadvantages. But, in this case the white rice is certainly better for your health.
